APPLICATION PROCESSING

The Authority awards points to each application based on "need" factors established by the Board of Commissioners.

Applicants that are not already in some form of subsidized housing may qualify for the Maryland Renter's Tax Credit.  The State of Maryland provides a direct check payment of up to $750 a year for renters who paid rent in the State of Maryland and meet certain eligibility requirements.  You can download the Renter's Tax Credit (RTC) application here.

Criminal Records Check

The Housing Authority of Washington County determines eligibility for participation and will also conduct criminal background checks on all adult household members, including live-in aides. The Housing Authority of Washington County will deny assistance to a family because of the abuse of alcohol in a way that may interfere with the health, safety or right to peaceful enjoyment of the premises by other residents, drug-related criminal activity or violent criminal activity by any family member within the past 3 years. This check will be made through state or local law enforcement or court records in those cases where the household member has lived in the local jurisdiction for the last three years. If the individual has lived outside the local area, the Housing Authority of Washington County may contact law enforcement agencies where the individual had lived or request a check through the FBI's National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

The Housing Authority of Washington County will check with the State sex offender registration program and will not serve any individual who is registered as a lifetime sex offender.   Furthermore, such individuals may not be part of a household we serve.

Past Debts

The Housing Authority of Washington County will deny assistance to applicants who currently owe rent or other amounts to any housing authority in connection with the public housing or Section 8 Programs, or failure to keep payments on a repayment agreement for such amounts current.

HAWC News

4/13/2012

HAWC Tenant Buys Home - Friday the 13th was a very lucky day for one of HAWC's tenant families.  After receiving Section 8 rental assistance for a number of years, the dream of home ownership was realized.  Patricia M. credits her relationship with the HAWC staff and Linda Rhodes of the Family Self-Sufficiency program for keeping her on track to obtain her goal of good credit and enough savings to cover the down payment on the home she chose and has resided in for 1 1/2  years.

Check out HAWC's home ownership programs for both low-income and moderate-income families.  Where will you be living 5 years from now?
